Eagle boys win season opener
NEW ULM – The New Ulm boy’s tennis team opened its season with a 5-2 victory against New Prague on Monday.
Blustery wind was a prevalent factor in the first meet of spring at the New Ulm tennis courts. Coach Peter Engeldinger said the wind can affect strategy depending on the differing sides of the court.
“On each side, you had to make a little bit of an adjustment,” said junior Josh Koelpin. “When you were on the far side, you couldn’t hit away quite as much – the ball would sail on you.”
Koelpin, who defeated Cody Gebur 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 slot for the Eagles, said he made the proper adjustments to combat the issues caused by the wind despite some minor unforced errors.
“I thought when I could get around my backhand and hit an inside-out forehand cross-court, that shot was working pretty well for me,” Koelpin said.
At the No. 1 spot, Calvin Collum Jr. notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Max Wicklander for the Eagles. Collum said he adjusted well to the wind on both sides of the court after the third game within the first set.
“My forehands were on target today, moving where I wanted them to be,” Collum said. “My backhands were where I needed them to be when I wanted them.”
Tim Haag and Noah Stocker completed the sweep in singles play for the Eagles, tallying victories in the No. 3 and 4 slots. Haag rebounded from a 3-6 first-set loss by winning his final two sets 6-0, 7-4.
In doubles, Nic Gartner and Joel Koelpin were the Eagles’ lone winners with a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Eric Morris and Tony Larson.
“Our team definitely needs these wins,” Collum said. “Motivates us more, have us work hard so we can succeed throughout the year.”
New Ulm will continue its nonconference slate at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Mankato West.
