Greyhounds pound Rockets 27-0
NEW ULM – New Ulm Cathedral softball showed off its offensive power on Thursday in a five-inning 27-0 rout of Comfrey/Cedar Mountain in Tomahawk Conference play.
The Greyhound offense batted through the lineup in the first inning and jumped out to an early 11-0 lead to put the game out of reach.
Cathedral had another monster inning in the third, when it hit through the lineup two times en route to scoring 14 more runs.
All in all, the Greyhounds amassed 21 RBIs on 19 hits with 14 different players recordeing a hit in the game.
“We have really been working on our hitting this year and we just want to continue to go out and hit the ball hard,” Cathedral center fielder Anne Schwarz said.
Cathedral also put its patience on display, drawing 13 walks to get on base.
Schwarz led the Cathedral offense going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. McKenna Berdan, Abby Hauser and MacKinnon Ehlenz added two hits apiece.
The Greyhound defense did its job securing the shutout. Only two runners reached base the entire game for the Rockets and there were no errors committed by the Greyhounds.
“It’s really nice to know that if our bats aren’t hot one day, our defense will always be there to back us up,” Schwarz said.
Anna Mohr started the game on the mound and got the win for Cathedral. Mohr pitched one inning and retired all three batters she faced with two via strikeout to earn the win.
Leah Krzmarzick pitched a perfect second inning before Nicole Gangelhoff came in to finish the last two innings.
Katelyn Christensen recorded the lone hit, a single, for the Rockets in the fourth inning, but was unable to score. Christensen was 1-for-2 at the plate.
Whitney Trebesch was the losing pitcher for C/CM. She pitched the first two innings before Cassidy Gode came in for relief.
“Our girls showed a lot of integrity today,” C/CM Jessica Scheuerlein said. “Even though we were down, we never let our heads hang.”
Cathedral (3-0) plays on Saturday at the Wabasso invitational, while C/CM plays a doubleheader on Tuesday at Wabasso.
