MLC drops doubleheader to Northland
DULUTH, Minn. – The Martin Luther College softball team suffered a pair of losses Friday against Northland College by the scores of 11-0 and 7-6.
A nine-run fourth inning led the Lumberjills (7-13, 7-1 UMAC) to an 11-0 win in Game 1.
Kathryn Marquardt started the game for the Knights (10-9, 4-5) and held the Lumberjills to two runs through three innings, but allowed nine runs on eight hits in the fourth.
MLC was unable to hold an early five-run lead as Northland came from behind to walk off in the seventh with a 7-6 win.
The Knights jumped ahead 4-0 in the second inning thanks to RBIs from Waldek and MacCartney Mendolla and pushed the lead to 5-0 in the third after Sara Willems’ fifth home run of the season.
Northland came back with six runs in the fourth inning off Emily Doell to take a one-run lead.
MLC tied the game in the seventh as Andrea Biedenbender singled home Emily Wessel, who led off the frame with a triple. The Lumberjills came back to win, however, with a two-out single to score the winning run.
Doell pitched a complete game for MLC, allowing four earned runs as she fell to 4-4 on the season.
MLC returns to action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran.
