Tax Freedom Day through the years

To the editor:

The Sunday, April 13 “Our View” stated that the Tax Freedom date for the past four years has been later each year under President Obama. That is factually true. A quick historical check shows that this date has fluctuated between April 8 (earliest under Obama) and May 1 (latest under Bill Clinton) since the 1960’s. In 1980 Jimmy Carter, 1990 George H. Bush, 2000 Bill Clinton, 2001+ 2005-2007 George W. Bush all had tax freedom dates equal to or past Obama’s April 21, 2014 date. Since 1970, the Tax Freedom date has been on April 21 or later for 19 out of the past 44 years. The Tax Freedom date is different for residents of each state as each state has its own tax burden. As well, an individual’s Tax Freedom date depends on the calculation of your income and all taxes paid to the State and Federal Government. To calculate your Tax Freedom date, take your gross income and divide by 365 (answer A), then divide your combined taxes (Federal and State) by answer A, and the resulting number (answer B) is the number of days of income it takes to pay your State and Federal taxes. Convert to a date. Depending on your situation your date could be earlier or later than April 21. www.taxfoundation.org/taxfreedomday
