Eagles shut out JCC
NEW ULM – An early scoring spurt propelled the New Ulm baseball team in its home opener.
New Ulm notched seven runs in the first inning and three in the third to beat Jackson County Central 10-0 in five innings in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday at Johnson Park.
“I was really pleased with all three aspects of the game,” said New Ulm coach Jay Backer. “We hit the ball as well as you can, we pitched outstanding and our fielding was solid.”
The Eagles (2-1, 1-0 South Central) caused problems for opposing starter Freeman Scott, who got the loss after giving up seven runs – six earned – on five hits in 1/3 inning pitched.
Jeremiah Flatgard was sent in for Scott after he hit Brach Kraus on the second pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Tyler Dittrich for the fifth run of the first. Flatgard got out of the inning for the Huskies (0-5, 0-4 Southwest), but not after allowing Scott’s final two runs – the latter on an error by the shortstop that drove in Luke Irmiter.
“They didn’t throw much of anything besides a fastball,” said New Ulm senior Judd Davis of the opposing pitchers. “Maybe mix in a change-up, but we all saw the ball pretty well today.”
Davis went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot, scoring runs in the first and third innings. He also drove in Connor Forbrook on a sacrifice flyout to center field for the second out – and his second at-bat – of the first inning.
Fellow senior Grant Kannegiesser also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs – both tallied in the third inning.
Wyatt Peterson got the win on the mound for the Eagles, having struck out three batters and allowed two hits and two walks in five innings pitched.
“Wyatt came in today and was around the plate and stuck with his fastball – they struggled with his fastball,” Backer said. “We didn’t really mess around with any off-speed pitches because we didn’t have to. [He was] consistently right around the plate, you’re going to get calls on the corners when you pitch like that.”
Jackson County Central has not beaten New Ulm since May 18, 2006, when it won a 2-1 contest.
New Ulm returns to action at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, when it hosts Blue Earth Area in a South Central Conference game.
