NEW ULM – Some people may call it a statment game, but it was a game that might open some eyes.

New Ulm scored six runs in tbe bottom of the fourth inning to turn a close game into a blowout contest as it went to top previously unbeaten Luverne 11-1 in six innings on Monday afternoon in a nonconference baseball game at Mueller Park.

Chase Meyer, making his first start of the year, got the win for New Ulm (4-1). The righthander scattered two singles while striking out six. The only run he allowed was unearned.

Gunnar Olson took the loss for Luverne (5-1). He allowed three runs in his three innings of work. Logan Norman pitched the final three innings and was tagged with eight runs.

Jackson Yackley had three hits for New Ulm and drove in four runs. Tanner Kluis and Tyler Dittrich each added two hits.

“The guys knew the magnitude of this game and they were really focused,” said New Ulm coach Jay Backer. “And they played real well today.”

New Ulm, which hosts Belle Plaine at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Johnson Park, pushed two runs across in the bottom of the first inning when Grant Kannegiesser reached on a fielder’s choice and Kluis walked. Yackley’s two-out base hit to center field scored both runners.

New Ulm upped the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third, Kluis reached on a single to center field and Yackley was plunked by a two-out offering from Olson. Wyatt Peterson followed with an RBI base hit.

Luverne tallied its only run of the game in the top of the fourth when Norman reached on an error and eventually scored on a groundout by Tommy Vajgrt.

But the Eagles responded in the bottom of the inning using three hits, an error, one walk and two hit batters for six runs.

New Ulm ended the game in the home half of the sixth with two runs.

“Chase threw a little bit more pitches than we had hoped but against a quality team like this, he is only going to get better,” Backer said. “We have now taken two teams [Fairmont and Luverne] that have been a good challenge for us and beaten them both early in the year. We need to keep building on this and keep going.”
