Statewide tornado drills set Thursday
ST. PAUL-Statewide tornado drills are scheduled for 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., Thursday, April 24, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Municipalities will sound all sirens and all NOAA (National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration) weather radios in Minnesota. The afternoon drill is intended for institutions and businesses. The evening drill is intended for second shift workers and families.
“If there is actual severe weather forecast, the drills will not be done, so the general public will not be confused by drills and actual severe weather,” said Brown County Emergency Management Deputy Director Desiree Hohenstein.
Minnesota experiences an average of 40 tornadoes annually. In 2012, 37 twisters touched down. The Minnesota annual state tornado record was 104 tornadoes set in 2010.
