GFW board approves ’15 Fla. band/choir trip

FAIRFAX – The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) school board unanimously approved on Monday a 2015 band/choir trip for about 90 students and about a dozen chaperones to Orlando and Cocoa Beach, Fla.

According to the proposal, no school days would be missed during the trip to take place from Saturday, March 21 to Saturday, March 28, 2015. Students in the GFW Concert Band and Concert Choir will perform one concert and attend one clinic each. They will also attend musical performances by similar groups from around the country and world.

Student costs estimated at about $1,100 each include a roundtrip motor coach ride to Florida.

Motel accommodations are yet to be arranged. Requirements are a motel with security, close to Disney parks, sleeping four to eight people per room. A student-chaperone ratio must be no more than eight to one.

Students will sponsor various fund-raisers to support the trip.

The board also approved a retirement incentive in which the school district will contribute a one-time payment to Health Savings Account (HSA) of $6,000 for 35 or more years of service, $5,500 for 30 to 34 years, $5,000 for 25 to 29 years and $4,500 for 20 to 24 years.

For teachers continuing to take part in the school district’s group health insurance plan, monthly insurance payments of $550 for 35 plus years, $500 for 30 to 34 years, $450 for 25 to 29 years and $400 for 20 to 24 years will be made by the district.

Superintendent Tami Martin said salary negotiations continue and progress is being made with a number of proposals by both sides.

Martin said a district robotics committee has developed a robotics program for elementary and high school students that will help sustain the program.

Martin recognized the recent deaths of two people who supported GFW schools, staff and students. “Coach (Chuck) Sundeen and Ted Domeier (of Fairfax) touched all of us, making GFW a better school system today,” she said.

The next GFW board meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., Monday, May 19.
