BLC sweeps MLC in tripleheader
NEW ULM -The Martin Luther College baseball team needed a pair of wins in a tripleheader against Bethany Lutheran to reach the Upper Midwest Athletic Conferencet, but instead lost all three games by the scores of 7-1, 15-4 and 5-2.
MLC fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 7-1 loss in Game 1.
Jake Ziel took the loss on the mound for MLC, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in five innings as he fell to 5-3 on the season.
The Vikings scored once in the first inning following a costly MLC error, and then took control in the third with three runs to take a 4-0 lead. MLC was held to five hits in the game, with Andrew Nemmers leading the way with a pair of doubles.
BLC jumped on the Knights and never looked back in Game 2, scoring 12 runs in the first two innings on the way to a 15-4 win.
The Vikings scored six times in the first and six more in the second, ending MLC starting pitcher Matt Olson’s day after 1 2/3 innings. Olson allowed 11 runs (seven earned) on eight hits in the game.
James Hemmelman had a pair of hits, while Will Jensen drove in two runs for MLC.
BLC completed the three-game sweep with a 5-2 game three win.
The Vikings broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth, and then added a pair of insurance runs in the inning thanks to a pair of MLC errors to get the final three-run margin.
Travis Kretsch started for MLC and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in 4 innings.
Ben Edmundson had the lone RBI in the game for MLC on a double that scored Joel Hering.
MLC’s season ended following the sweep. It finished the season with a record of 12-19 overall and 9-12.
