Cathedral sweeps GFW

NEW ULM – Abby Hauser hit New Ulm Cathedral’s fourth grand slam of the season to put the icing on the cake of a 16-1 five-inning victory against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in Game 1 of a Tomahawk Conference doubleheader on Friday.

The senior’s grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning finished off a 3-for-3 day for her, during which she had five RBIs and three runs scored for the Greyhounds (13-1, 11-0 Tomahawk).

“It’s unreal – we’ve had a couple three-run homers too,” said Cathedral coach Bob Mertz of his team’s recent hitting success. “We’re not like the [Minnesota] Twins, who get those single home runs; we come in bunches. We’re hitting the ball well – the No. 3, 4, 5, 6 hitters are really solid.”

Leah Krzmarzick also went 3-for-3 for the Greyhounds with three RBIs, two runs and two doubles in Game 1. She also gave up three hits in two scoreless innings of relief in the circle.

“I wish she could throw a change-up for strikes, but she throws hard and does a nice job,” Mertz said. “She kept the ball down well too and mixed it up pitches real well. Of course, it helps when you have a senior catcher [Karlee Pfaff] back there; Karlee does a nice job calling a game.”

The Thunderbirds (4-5, 4-5) struggled against pitcher Anna Mohr, who allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks to get the win in the circle. They were also without senior Erin McDurmont, who coach Brian Magnusson sat for Game 1 due to an in-house issue.

“Defensively, we made some errors that we need to work on,” Magnusson said. “But our morale was up and our spirits were up and we kept it throughout the game.”

McDurmont returned to the circle for the Thunderbirds, who lost Game 2 in an 8-3 contest. McDurmont gave up six hits with five walks and five strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Aly Black went 3-for-4 with a solo home run for the Thunderbirds.

Anna Mohr got the win again for the Greyhounds, having held the Thunderbirds to three runs despite giving up nine hits. She also had six strikeouts.

GFW plays at the Hayfield invitational on Saturday. Catheral will host Minnesota Valley Lutheran for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
