PREP BASEBALL: Cathedral pulls away in sweep

FAIRFAX – New Ulm Cathedral defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 2-0 and 8-3 in a Tomahawk Conference doubleheader on Friday.

Two unearned runs off a double from Collin Helget in the bottom of the fifth inning were the difference-makers in Game 1. Helget gave up two hits and struck out four batters in going the distance on the mound for the Greyhounds.

Alex Howe had both hits for the Thunderbirds.

Tanner Buettner struck out six batters and gave up two hits in a complete-game loss.

Five runs in the bottom of the fifth broke open a tight Game 2 for Cathedral. Gabe Knowles allowed seven hits while striking out six batters in seven innings pitched for the win.

Howe and Seth Schuette each went 2-for-3 for the Thunderbirds.

Helget went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Michael Skillings went 1-for-2 with one RBI and Brandon Beranek went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Cathedral hosts BOLD at noon on Saturday, while GFW will play Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 7 p.m. on Monday at Mueller Park.

St. Anthony Village 13, New Ulm 1 (5 inn.)

ST. ANTHONY VILLAGE – St. Anthony crushed New Ulm on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.

Wyatt Peterson took the loss going three innings. He gave up eight runs on 10 hits and struck out one batter.

Chase Meyer was 1-for-1 for New Ulm with a double and one RBI. Tanner Kluis went 1-for-2 with a double. Judd Davis went 1-for-2.

New Ulm (11-3, 4-1) will host St. James Area at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Springfield 7, Wabasso 1

SPRINGFIELD – Springfield defeated Wabasso 7-1 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Carter Erickson got the win on the mound, having given up one earned run on two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Nick Altermatt got the loss for the Rabbits, having given up five runs – four earned – on three hits.
