Donations for Dog Park increase

NEW ULM -The Park and Rec Commission accepted several donations for the new Dog Park on Monday.

Donations included $2,381 for a one-time, in-kind service for gravel parking lot from M.R. Paving & Excavating Inc., $127 from the Church of Cash event, $100 from Charles and Barbara Bornhoft, $94.82 for one-time in-kind service for refuse dumpster for special events from River View Sanitation, and $15 from Tim and Mary Ann Wonn.

The Dog Park located within South German Park has received $14,000 of private funding to date. Park and Rec Director Tom Schmitz announced the perimeter fence was likely to be installed within the week.

South German Park Camping

On July 18 and 19 River Valley BMX Club is hosting a Minnesota State Qualifier Race. The annual event usually includes camping activities in South German Park near the BMX Park. Although city code restricts camping on public property; the City Council has authorized camping for similar purposes in the past. The Commission agreed to recommend to the City Council the authorization of temporary camping for the BMX event.

Safety and Health Grants

The Commission authorized an application for an OSHA safety grant for at least 50 percent of the estimated $5,000 cost for glass-handling safety equipment. The equipment would be used to assemble and disassemble hockey rink board glass in the Civic Center. Park and Rec Director Tom Schmitz said the glass is taken down at least once a year for various events. The board glass is heavy and difficult to handle, and the work has resulted in staff injuries in the past.

The City could add other safety equipment purchases to this grant application up to $10,000. The maximum cost to New Ulm would be $10,00 for a grant total of $20,000 in equipment.

Healthy Activities Grant

The Healthy Activity Grant application was recommended. This grant is part of Allina’s Neighborhood Health Connection program. It will allow the City to offer family fitness opportunities at various locations beginning in July and running through December. The grant application is up to $1,000.
