Melby wins Woman of the Year honor
NEW ULM – Amber Melby, the New Ulm woman who spearheaded a local fundraising campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LSS), was named the LSS Woman of the Year at ceremonies in downtown Minneapolis on Friday.
Melby, the Allina Home Care and Hospice Manager, participated in the “Climb for the Cure” event this year, inspired by her a friend’s young son, Cole “Coley Bear,” McDonough of Plymouth, who was diagnosed in January 2013 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Melby led “Team Coley Bear” in a fundraising effort that raised $66,906 for the LLS, earning her the Woman of the Year honors by a wide margin.
The previous record by a Woman of the Year winner was $38,000.
Melby said she wanted to thank the team all the people of New Ulm for their support in the effort.
“We were the only team outside of the metro area and I think that shows what great things can come from small communities like ours!” Melby said.
The Climb for the Cure raises funds for blood cancer research, patient research, patient services, education and advocacy in the fight against Leukemia.
