Carlson, Dewanz to speak on Memorial Day

NEW ULM-Recent high school graduates and American Legion Boys State attendees Barrett Carlson and Bryan Dewanz will speak at the New Ulm Memorial Day Cemetery Observance that begins at 10 a.m. Monday.

A Cathedral High School graduate who plans to attend the University of Minnesota and study in the science/technology field, Carlson will read the Gettysburg Address.

Dewanz, a New Ulm High School graduate who has future plans with the U.S. Coast Guard, will give the Memorial Day Address.

Master of Ceremonies is former U.S. Navy recruiter, drill instructor and Seal Team Eight member Linda Sherry of New Ulm who is now the VFW Post 1648 Commander.

Dr. Peter Mansoor, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who is now an author and Ohio State University Military History Department Chairman, will give a special greeting at the observance.

Cathedral High School graduate and U.S. Air Force Major Glen E. Christensen, who received the Bronze Star Medal (Second Oak Leaf Cluster with Valor in 2005, plans to attend the observance. He distinguished himself by heroism as the Operations Officer, Task Force 1041, 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing while engaged in ground combat including ambushes, bombings, mortar and rocket attacks at Balad Air Base, Iraq from Nov. 17, 2004 to March 5, 2005. Christensen guided numerous combat patrols to raid enemy safe houses, seize weapons caches and repel enemy ambushes.

A parade begins at 9 a.m. Monday near St. Mary’s Church and will proceed north on Minnesota Street to 5th North.

Sleepy Eye observances include a 9 a.m. flag-raising at the Servicemen’s Club followed by programs at St. Mary’s, Home and Leavenworth Cemeteries. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at the club following services. Buses will be available for the public to use to travel to cemeteries.

Other area programs include 9 a.m. programs in the GFW Elementary School gym in Gibbon and at the Fairfax Auditorium where Major LeRoy Kiecker will speak, at 9:30 a.m. in the Cedar Mountain Elementary Gym in Franklin, at 10 a.m. in the Lafayette Mini-Park, Gaylord Veteran’s Memorial in the City Park and Wabasso Community Center, at 10:30 a.m. at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan and the Lamberton Legion Hall, at 11 a.m. in Nicollet City Park, at 5 p.m. in the Springfield Public School Fine Arts Auditorium, and at 6:30 p.m. in the Redwood Falls PAC including a keynote address by Mike McLaughlin who served two tours in Iraq.
