NEW ULM – Vera Meredith, 97, of New Ulm died Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor John Gabrielson officiating. Burial will follow in the Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday. Vera is survived by a step grandson, Bryan Meredith of California; a sister, Laura (Harold) Richter of New Ulm; brothers, Vernon (Darlene) Wieland and Jim Wieland all of New Ulm; a brother-in-law, Leonard Breu of New Ulm; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Wieland of New Ulm, and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert, two children in infancy, a step son, Steven Meredith, and by several brothers, sisters and their spouses.
Vera Helen Wieland, the daughter of Fred and Ella (Meyer) Wieland was born on December 30, 1916 in New Ulm. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School in New Ulm. On October 11, 1948 Vera married Robert Meredith in Minneapolis. After marriage they lived in Minneapolis where she worked as a waitress at the Minneapolis American Legion. After a few years living there they moved to Jesup, Iowa and Vera worked as a waitress at the Littleton Restaurant until 1980 when she retired. She moved back to New Ulm in 1989. Vera was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm and she served on the funeral lunch committee. She also did volunteer work at the rest home in Madelia, delivered meals to residents at the Broadway Haus when she lived there for several years and was a member of the Young at Heart Club in New Ulm. When Vera could no longer live on her own at the Broadway Haus, she moved to Ridgeway on 23rd for several years before becoming a resident at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in February of 2013.
