PREP BASEBALL: St. Mary’s beats MVL to advance in 2A
St. Mary’s 8, MVL 2
SLEEPY EYE – No. 3-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated No. 6-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran 8-2 in the Section 2A baseball playoffs on Saturday.
Mike Zinniel got the win for the Knights (17-4, 13-3 Tomahawk), having struck out five batters while allowing eight hits and two runs in a complete game.
Brandon Helget went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while David Surprenant went 2-for-3.
Nick Dewanz got the loss for the Chargers (5-12, 5-10), having given up eight runs on nine hits in four innings. He went 2-for-3 with one RBI at the plate, while Jacob Hoffman went 2-for-3.
St. Mary’s will play No. 2-seeded BOLD at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Bird Island.
Springfield 11, Southwest Star Concept 0 (5 inn.)
Springfield 12, Mountain Lake Area 11
SPRINGFIELD – Springfield advanced in Section 3A with an 11-0 five-inning victory against Southwest Star Concept and a 12-11 win against Mountain Lake Area on Saturday.
Cooper Scheffler, Jevan Richert, Carter Erickson and Branden Flock each had two RBIs for the Tigers (18-2, 14-2 Tomahawk) in their first game. Dylan Wersal got the win with four strikeouts.
Springfield held off a seventh-inning surge by Mountain Lake Area, during which it scored four runs to pull to within 12-11.
Wersal repreived his stand on the mound, this time for the one-inning save. Erickson got the win, having given up four runs (two earned) on one hit, while Scheffler got the no-decision.
Richert went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, while Flock went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Tim Krueger went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Springfield will play No. 3-seeded Lakeview at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sacred Heart.
Wabasso 3, Adrian Area 1 (10 inn.)
Windom Area 8, Wabasso 1
WINDOM – Wabasso assured itself another day by beating No. 3-seeded Adrian Area 3-1 in a 10-inning game before falling to consolation play with an 8-1 loss to No. 2-seeded Windom Area in Section 3A South on Saturday.
In the first game, Neil Eichten broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the 10th inning with a triple that scored Tyler Kemp. Eichten was later driven in by Josh Altermatt to give the Rabbits the 3-1 lead and eventual win.
Eichten got the win on the mound for Altermatt, having given up two hits in five innings of work with four strikeouts.
Nick Altermatt got the loss on the mound against Windom, having given up five hits and four runs in 1 2/3 innings of work. Caleb Salfer scored the Rabbits’ lone run in the fourth inning.
No. 6-seeded Wabasso will face No. 4-seeded Mountain Lake Area at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Windom.
