Blue leaves runners stranded in 3-1 loss
NEW ULM – New Ulm Blue left too many people on base as it fell 3-1 to Mankato National in Legion baseball on Thursday night at Mueller Park.
Blue left 13 players on base while National stranded only seven runners. Both teams had seven hits and one error apiece for the game.
Andrew Stewart got the loss. He went 6 1/3 innings and gave up three runs.
Garret Banwart got the win. He pitched six innings and gave up one run.
Both teams put together threats to score in the first three innings.
Blue scored its first run in the bottom of the third inning. Connor Forbrook, Nick Vogel and Brandon Beranek each singled to load the bases. Matt Rowley drew a walk, which scored Forbrook for an early 1-0 Blue lead.
The bases were still loaded when Alex Guggisberg stepped to the plate. He struck out to end the inning.
Mankato National pushed two runs across their half of the fifth inning. Kleist earned a two-out walk, stole second and went to third on a single. He scored on a called balk by Blue pitcher Stewart. Josh Cook hit a right field single to score Kevin Marzolf for a 2-1 lead for National.
Devin Ries was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh inning. Josh Cook hit a bloop single to right field. Shane Sellner hit a single to left field that scored Ries with an insurance run to make it 3-1.
Blue left three runners on in the third and fifth innings. It left two runners on in the first inning, one in the second, one in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Wyatt Olberg drew a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, but Blue was unable to capitalize on it when Forbrook grounded out to the pitcher. Vogel flew out to center field and Alex Stark struck out.
Beranek walked with one out in the seventh. Rowley singled to center field and Guggisberg reached first base when a third strike got past the catcher. Jack Schwartz hit into a game-ending double-play with a line drive to the pitcher who doubled Guggisberg off first base.
