Larson wins fifth title

NEW ULM – There wasn’t much drama as to whom was going to win the Championship Flight at the New Ulm Invitational on Sunday.

In fact, four-time champion Johnny Larson headed into the final championship round of nine holes ahead of the second-place golfer by eight strokes.

Larson finished with a two-day total of 140 and won his record fifth title. He now holds the record for most Championship Flight wins, breaking the previous record of four.

“I played good, played solid all day long,” Larson said. “I think I played one-under for the day, which is good enough.”

He’s never been one to make a big deal out of winning the tournament. It’s just a good time for him to see some of his old friends back on the course.

“It’s just a fun weekend for me, numbers are numbers,” he said. “It’s just fun coming back and seeing everybody. Living here for three or four years, you get to know the members real well.”

Larson finished eight strokes ahead of Max Mason, who finished with a score of 148 after the championship round of nine holes. The golfers played nine holes on Saturday because of the weather and 18 on Sunday. The top 12 golfers on the Championship Flight then golfed nine more holes for their final score.

Three-time champion Mike Fiedler finished tied for third with a 149 and Dan Lensing also shot a 149. Ted Wirtz finished with a 150 to finish fifth.

While Larson was dominating the Championship Flight, Scott Paa was playing a solid 18 holes on Sunday to win the First Flight for the second time with a 119. He won it two years ago and competed in the Championship Flight last year. He edged Darren Anderson by three strokes (122).

Tim Andersen, who also won the Championship Flight four times, continued his hold on the Senior Championship Flight. Andersen won the flight with a 117, one stroke better than Dudley Whiteley (118).

Roger Fortwengler won the Second Flight (121), ahead of Andy Budahn (126) and Jerry Boddy won the Third Flight (130).

Paul Fromm finished first in the Fourth Flight with a 106 and Tom Herbeck claimed the Senior Flight A (104). Pete Pream won Senior Flight B (111) and Don Olson won Senior Flight C (105).
