Brown County Teen Court receives award

NEW ULM – Brown County commissioners will learn today that the Brown County Teen Court program recently received an award for being the longest-running program of its type in Minnesota.

The Teen Court program received the Excellence in Corrections Award from the Minnesota Association of County Probation Officers at their annual conference in Brainerd last month.

The Brown County Teen Court program has had nearly 1,000 first and select second-time offenders successfully complete its program since 1998, according to the Request for Board Action (RBA).

Teen Court has about 75 jurors “trained” to hear cases and decide a fair sentence. It provides a great opportunity for adolescents to be involved in the criminal justice system in a positive way, according to the RBA.

Mary Ann Wonn has been the Teen Court Coordinator for 10 years.

Commissioners will also consider:

Drainage ditch repair requests totaling $7,074.46 in CD5 Prairieville Township, sections 11 and 12; CD10 Home Township, sections 2 and 11; CD33, Albin Township, Section 18; CD47 Leavenworth Township, section 15; JD 12 North Star Township, section 1 and JD 29, Eden Township, section 33.

Renewing up to a $2,451 Adult Basic Education Cooperative contract between Brown County and the Mankato Area Life Lines Consortium to continue the General Education Degree (GED) program for inmates from July 1, through June 30, 2015. Additional costs include actual GED testing, and cost of GED Examiner plus mileage, billed as testing is requested.

In other action, commissioners will receive information on summer food programs for children under age 18.
