Virgil Bruns

Virgil Bruns, 76, of Courtland, died Friday, June 13, 2014 at his home in rural Courtland.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, June 19 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Courtland with Pastor Grant Bode officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and 7:30 to 8 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm and continuing for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Mary Bruns of rural Courtland; children, Crystal (Zach) Janssen of Mankato, Kelly (Melissa) Bruns of Courtland, Terry (Holly) Bruns of Courtland; grandchildren, Grant and Alivia Bruns, Duane Janssen; sister, Dolores (Delmont) Syverson of Tucson, AZ; brother, Darwin (Carla) Bruns of St. Peter; brother-in-law, James Stein of rural Courtland; and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Arleen Stein; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Oradel Bruns; and a baby brother.

Virgil Merlin Bruns was born on January 28, 1938 to Fred Jr. and Verneeda (Bendix) Bruns in New Ulm. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School in rural Courtland. On September 18, 1971, Virgil was united in marriage to Mary Quiring at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Virgil farmed for his entire life until retiring in 1995. However, after retirement he continued to work at Courtland Industries and Hewitt Roll-A-Dock until officially retiring in 2003. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his special grandchildren. Virgil loved to fish, watch birds, feed deer, cutting and splitting wood, yard work, and driving his restored Farmall Super M.

He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland, a finance committee member at Immanuel, and he served as a janitor at Immanuel with Mary for 18 years.
