VFW Gold splits Friday games at Monticello

MONTICELLO – New Ulm VFW Gold split its Friday games at the Monticello Tournament, losing to Brainerd 7-5 before beating Rogers 8-0 in five innings.

Nick Fischer took the loss for Gold (5-4) in Game 1, having gone 4 1/3 innings and struck out five batters. J.T. Hoffman went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, Brandon Mehlhop went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a double and A.J. Lassas tallied two RBIs.

In Game 2, Cooper Forbrook got the win with three strikeouts in the full five innings. He also allowed just two hits.

Hoffman continued his hot streak with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, during which he drove in two runs. E.J. Berdan went 2-for-3 with one run scored, Fischer notched two RBIs and Lassas scored two runs.

Gold will play for fifth place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and will host St. James at 5:45 p.m. on Monday.
