Red 16U rebounds from jitters with wins
NEW ULM – The New Ulm Red 16U softball team went 2-1 on Saturday in the first day of competition in Pool B at the Windmill Classic fastpitch softball tournament.
North St. Paul defeated Red 6-1 in Game 1. The Polars scored three runs in the second inning. Jenna Helget walked and later scored Red’s lone run of the game on a double by Megan Hulke.
The Polars scored three more runs in the sixth inning, using a double to score two runs and a single for its final run of the contest.
Hulke went 1-for-2 with one RBI and Bergan Forst went 1-for-3.
Emma Bute was the losing pitcher. She went 3 2/3 innings.
Red coach Kelli Bolduan said her team hadn’t played a game in more than a week due to the recent rainstorms. She said the team had jitters in the first game.
Red rebounded in its second game by shutting out Annandale 7-0. It scored four runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth. A combination of aggressive base running and some mistakes by Annandale contributed to the runs for Red.
Ramsi Forst had two walks and two RBIs while Rachel Kehren went 2-fo-3. Bergan Forst went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
Anna Mohr was the winning pitcher in Game 2. She pitched six innings, gave up no runs on three hits. She struck out five batters and walked none.
Red crushed Rockford 14-0 in four innings in the final game. Rockford committed two errors in the first inning and Red was able to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. It continued to score runs in the second and third innings for the win.
Hulke went 1-for-1 with four runs scored and Taylor Bolduan walked three times, had a sacrifice and she scored two runs.
Bute was the winning pitcher. She gave up no runs and two hits going all four innings. She struck out six batters and she didn’t walk anyone.
Red will open brackey play against St. Peter Thunder at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Harman Field 2. If it loses the first game, it is eliminated from the tournament. If it wins that game, it will be guaranteed two more games.
