Information being posted about District 88 referendum

NEW ULM – District 88 and community volunteers are beginning to post, and continually update, information about an upcoming school bond referendum Aug. 12.

Voters will be asked to approve a $46.9 million bond to build a new high school and remodel existing schools.

A group of supporters has begun posting information on the issue on social media. This information can be accessed at www.facebook.com/Isd88voteyes.

The information includes the volunteer group’s answers to many frequently-asked questions about the referendum: why the bond is needed, what would it accomplish, what happens if the bond fails, why it is considered by some as the best solution among several, what alternatives were considered, how the decision was made and what the projects would include. The information also includes preliminary drawings to illustrate the proposed projects and how-to-vote information.

The information is continuously being expanded and updated.

In turn, District 88 is posting information on its own web site, www.newulm.k12.mn.us/

Some of the information on the district web site details the tax impact of the referendum, by providing several calculators a tax payer can use, to calculate specific impact on homesteaded, agricultural, commercial, industrial, rental and other properties. Another section on the district web site includes downloadable pdf files that sum up the meetings of a community task force whose work led to the bond proposal. The summaries explain the decision-making process and also outline rationales and specific proposed actions.

Social media will not be the only way to learn about the referendum. Presentations will be made to various organizations. Community informational meetings will be held in Hanska on July 21, Lafayette on July 22 and New Ulm on July 28 and 29. Information will also be mailed to voters and published in print media. The district office will also provide information upon request.
