Tonka tops NU
NEW ULM – The Tonka Mudhens pounded out 15 hits and scored in every inning as they rolked by New Ulm VFW Gold 10-2 Thursday night in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic.
Jake Barnum got the pitching win for the Hens. He went four innings.
Cooper Forbrook took the loss for New Ulm. He was charged with seven runs in his five innings of work. He struck out two.
Fox Leum led Tonka with four hits with Matt Mitchell adding three as the Hens out-hit New Ulm 15-5 in the game.
J.T. Hoffmann and E.J. Berdan each had two hits for Gold.
“We did not get the key hit that we needed,” said coach Derek Wilfahrt. “Tonka is a good hitting team. I was surprised that we did not hit the ball well but we will bounce back.”
Tonka scored single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead thanks to a fielder’s choice and and then a base hit and ensuing error.
New Ulm scored its first run in the bottom of the second when Nick Fischer walked and was sacrificed to seonnd by Forbrook.
Bayler Kraus was hit by a pitch before Berdan laced a bad-hop single over third, scoring Fischer.
Tonka increased its lead to 3-1 in the top of the third on a Pierson Pass RBI double.
Gold countered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Hoffmann legged out a bunt single, swiped second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Jack Jenzen.
He eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to Cole Wellmann. That was all the scoring in the inning as New Ulm left the bases loaded.
Gold threatened in the fourth when Berdan led off with a single, went to second on a Cooper Yackley groundout before Hoffmann was hit by a pitch.
But Tonka worked out of the inning on a strike out and a groundout to end the threat.
Off the 11 runners lefr on base in the game for New Ulm, seven were in scoring position.
The Hens then scored two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to assume a 9-2 lead before adding a run in the top of the seventh.
