Sleepy Eye advances
Wayzata 5, Sleepy Eye 1
SLEEPY EYE – Sleepy Eye suffered its first loss of the Junior Upper Midwest Classic on Saturday in Sleepy Eye.
Alex Sellner took the loss. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Nathan Schroepfer scored Sleepy Eye’s only run after he doubled and later scored on an error in the first inning.
Sleepy Eye led 1-0 until the fourth when Wayzata scored two runs. Wayzata added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
Ryan Welch earned the win for Wayzata.
Sleepy Eye plays at 9 a.m. Sunday at Johnson Park in the first semifinal game.
Sleepy Eye 8, Osseo 7
NEW ULM – Sleepy Eye defeated Osseo in the battle of the unbeatens earlier on Saturday morning at Mueller Park.
Austin Fischer had three hits for Sleepy Eye while Dylan Klein and Sam Tessmer each had two hits.
Alex Sellner earned the win for Sleepy Eye, pitching two innings. Eric Lyons took the loss for Osseo. Nobody had more than one hit for Osseo.
Sleepy Eye also turned in a good performance defensively and it turned a triple play in the second inning. It’s believed to be the first triple play in the tournament’s history.
Maple Grove 13, Tonka 12, 9 innings
NEW ULM – Maple Grove survived a wild contest Saturday at Mueller Park, winning in nine innings.
Matt Mitchell was 3-for-5 with three singles and an an RBI for Tonka. Brett Schulze was 4-for-4 with three singles, a double and two RBIs for Maple Grove. Josh Wente had a double to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
