Kelly dies from gunshot wound
NEW ULM – A New Ulm man who had been charged last week with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide has died of a self-inflicted gunshot injury.
New Ulm Police responded to a 911 call hang-up from a Riverside Park porta-potty at 1:03 p.m. Monday and found 22-year-old Liam P. Kelly of New Ulm with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers performed CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) before Allina Ambulance arrived.
Police said Kelly was flown by helicopter to the Twin Cities later Monday, where he died of his injury. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his death.
Kelly had been charged last week with two charges of felony criminal vehicular homicide and two charges of felony criminal vehicular operation. The charges stem from a fatal accident on Feb. 15 on Highway 14 on the west edge of town.
The February accident claimed the life of Randyn Groebner. Kelly, who was driving the car, and his brother, Ryan, a passenger, sustained serious injuries in the accident.
