Balloons released in Kelly’s memory
NEW ULM-Family and friends of Liam Kelly released a cloud of balloons over North 7th Street Bridge on Friday, in his memory.
The 22 year-old New Ulm native committed suicide on Monday.
Kelly’s father Sean Kelly spoke after the balloon release, encouraging everyone to talk with others about their problems, saying that Liam could not express himself fully. “Please hang on to the good times. The bad times will weigh you down,” said Sean Kelly.
In addition to his military service, Liam Kelly volunteered time with local reenactment groups. The weekend prior to his death, he had participated in The Fort Ridgely Company B Reenactment. Kelly’s involvement with the reenactment represented a tradition of serving and representing New Ulm.
Kelly’s mother, Wendy Kube, described her son as an awesome hero who had many loved ones. Kube wanted people remember how many people were touched in a positive way by Kelly. Kube encouraged everyone to visit the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention program, saying “this should never happen to anyone.”
Those who wish to support the Kelly family may purchase a specialized bracelet reading “Rest in Piece Solider: Liam Kelly”. For more information on the bracelets contact Brooke Wendler on Facebook or call 507-766-3387.
