NEW?ULM – Melvin Dewanz, 84, of New Ulm, died Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, July 10, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Timothy Smith officiating.
Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm with full military honors by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday.

Melvin is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Opal Dewanz of New Ulm; nieces; nephews; stepdaughter, Kathy (Paul) Krishnen; stepsons, Darwin Michaelis, Darrell (Pam) Michaelis; five stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona Dewanz on January 6, 2008; sisters and brothers-in-law, Viola Buysse, Agnes and Henry Buysse, Rose and Donald Reirson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alfred and Genevieve Dewanz, LeRoy and Jeannie Dewanz.
Melvin George Dewanz was born on January 22, 1930 in New Ulm to Fred and Clementia (Popp) Dewanz. On November 26, 1971 he was united in marriage to Leona Feske at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Melvin served in the U.S. Air Force for twenty years from April 7, 1949 to August 31, 1969. He had worked in New Ulm for New Ulm Wholesale and then as custodian at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Melvin was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm; the American Legion Post 132, D.A.V. Chapter 15, and V.F.W. Post 1648.
