Legion Gold wins Day 1 at Gopher Classic
ST. LOUIS PARK – New Ulm Legion Gold defeated Papillion Pinnacle Bank (Neb.) 4-1 in its first game of the Gopher Classic on Friday.
The early morning game Gold was scheduled to play was rained out and will not be made up.
Gold struck first in the top of the first inning, when Chase Meyer drove in Gabe Knowles with the bases loaded on a sac fly. Knowles later batted in Tyler Dittrich to give Gold a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Meyer gave up a run in the bottom of the second to cut the team’s lead to 2-1. However, Gold later scored two runs in the sixth and held off Papillion for the 4-1 victory.
Meyer got the win on the mound, having given up one earned run with six strikeouts in a complete game.
Knowles and Tanner Kluis each had two hits with one run scored, although Knowles also had an RBI.
The Gopher Classic continues Saturday. Gold will play Anoka at 1 p.m. and Chester Bird at 6 p.m.
