New Ulm Gold goes 4-2 at Gopher Classic over the weekend
ST. LOUIS PARK – New Ulm Gold went 4-2 over the weekend at the Gopher Classic in American Legion baseball action.
In the first game on Monday, Gold scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Rapid City 8-7 in first round of championship bracket play.
The bats were led by the bottom four hitters in the lineup as they combined for five hits, three walks and five runs scored, including all four runs in the seventh-inning rally.
Gabe Knowles pitched four innings and gave up two runs. Tyler Dittrich picked up the win in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
In the second game, New Ulm lost to Tri City Red 6-5. The game ended with the bases loaded and one out when Collin Helget hit into a game-ending double play. Dittrich started the game, going 2 2/3 innings and giving up three runs. Tanner Kluis pitched 3 1/3 innings in the loss.
Gold lost to Marshall 6-5 in nine innings on Sunday in its final game of Pool 2.
Against Marshall, Nick Dewanz gave up three earned runs in six innings pitched for the no-decision. Wyatt Peterson got the loss, having given up two unearned runs that tied the game at 5-5 before giving up another in the ninth inning.
Knowles was 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Gold in Sunday’s game.
Gold is now 18-7 overall and plays Worthington Tuesday at Mueller Park.
