Silver rally falls short

HUTCHINSON – Without a doubt, the New Ulm VFW Silver team has shown improvement from the beginning of the season, where defensive mistakes hurt the team almost every time it took the field.

On Thursday, Silver went from being no-hit through the first three innings to nearly pulling off the first-round victory in the VFW Northwest Subdistrict playoffs.

Silver rallied from a 6-0 deficit, falling to Dassel-Cokato 8-5. Silver will now play at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Hutchinson against the loser of Mankato and Glencoe.

Dassel-Cokato starter David Raisanen no-hit Silver through the first 3 1/3 innings. Alex Lund got New Ulm’s first hit of the game with one out in the fourth, an inning in which New Ulm scored two runs.

“What we started to do was we got patient,” New Ulm coach Preston Cowing said.?”We didn’t chase any bad balls and we made them come to us. We’ve been preaching that all year.”

After D-C scored two runs in the first, second and fourth innings, Silver got things going offensively. Lund and Jordan Hillesheim singled and Jacob Neumann and Jordan Rummel each picked up an RBI to make it 6-2.

After D-C scored a single run in the top of the fifth, New Ulm put together a rally in the fifth with three runs of its own.

However, D-C added another run in the seventh for the final 8-5 margin.

Kasey Kuck took the loss for New Ulm. He last 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs. New Ulm had four hits in the game.

The loss means Silver must win Friday to keep the season alive.

“I expect that they’ll come out like they have every single game and give it their best shot,” Cowing said.
