Bats work for Gold in 11-2 win
SHAKOPEE – New Ulm VFW Gold had no trouble downing the Sleepy Eye 15s in an 11-2 contest on Saturday in the Southeast Subdistrict VFW tournament in Shakopee.
Numerous players recorded multiple hits with an RBI and at least one run scored for Gold. Leading the lineup are Cooper Yackley (3-for-5, one RBI, two runs), E.J. Berdan (3-for-4, one RBI, two runs) and J.T. Hoffmann (3-for-5, one RBI, one run). Cole Wellmann went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Nick Fischer went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Bayler Kraus got the win for Gold, having given up two earned runs with one strikeout in a complete-game effort.
Gold will play Shakopee at 11 a.m. on Sunday in the championship round of the tournament.
Sleepy Eye 16s 6, Dassel 5
HUTCHINSON – The Sleepy Eye VFW baseball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to scale a 5-2 deficit en route to a 6-5 win against Dassel in the Northwest Subdistrict on Saturday in Hutchinson.
Nathan Schroepfer was the winning pitcher. He pitched two perfect innings in relief of Sam Tessmer, who gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
Alex Bruggeman led Sleepy Eye with two RBIs and a double in going 3-for-4. Dylan Klein went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Glencoe 6, Sleepy Eye 16s 2
HUTCHINSON – Sleepy Eye VFW’s season came to an end with a 6-2 loss to Glencoe.
Alex Sellner got the loss on the mound, giving up six runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
Jared Beltz went 2-for-3 and Austin Fischer went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Sleepy Eye 16s end their season with a 16-9 record.
