Local teams compete at MYSA state soccer tournament
Both New Ulm soccer teams that qualified for the MYSA State Soccer Tournament competed in the first round of “pool play” on Sunday afternoon.
The U-17 boys jumped to an early 2-0 lead against North District winner Arrowhead-Hermantown in Hugo. Josh Koelpin and Sam Wiechman tallied the goals. But Arrowhead cut the lead to 2-1 at the half.
A breakaway chance with just over 10 minutes equalized the score at 2-2. No overtime or shootout is played in the “pool play” rounds.
The U-15 Boys lost to South District champion Owatonna 3-0 in Shakopee. After a scoreless first half, Owatonna netted two close-range shots and scored directly off of a corner kick to make the final 3-0. The U-15s complete their pool in Shakopee at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Blaine.
