New Ulm U-17 soccer team falls to Winona at state tournament
HUGO – The Winona U-17 boy’s soccer team scored early and late en route to a 3-1 win over New Ulm in the second round of pool play at the MYSA State Soccer Tournament.
Winona netted a corner kick just a minute into the contest. The 1-0 score held until the half as New Ulm was stymied on several good first-half scoring opportunities.
Winona then scored a controversial second goal when they netted a chip shot after an apparent whistle had stopped play with just 15 minutes remaining.
Winona followed with a short-range goal just minutes later to go up 3-0. New Ulm’s lone goal came when a Noah Webb crossing pass glanced off a Winona defender’s head for an “own goal” late in the contest.
The loss eliminated New Ulm from advancing to the championship game. New Ulm finished the season with a 9-3-2 record.
