Gold blanks Woodbury
SLEEPY EYE – Tanner Kluis struck out 12 batters in leading New Ulm Legion Gold to an 8-0 victory against Woodbury Area in the first round of the Substate 2 Division I Legion baseball tournament at Sleepy Eye on Thursday.
Kluis went the distance and allowed just four hits and no walks in the shutout victory.
“Tanner threw a great game,” said Gold coach Jeremy Drexler. “He threw strikes, got ahead of hitters and the guys made plays.”
Gold set the tone with a four-run first inning. Collin Helget notched a two-RBI double for a 2-0 lead before Kluis struck with a two-RBI single to make it 4-0.
The prowess at the plate has come at the right time for Gold, which will play Fairmont in the semifinals on Friday.
“One of the keys is that we’re not striking out a lot,” Drexler said. “We’re putting the ball in play and making teams make plays and hitting a lot of balls hard. That’s a good combination with some good pitching that make for some good nights.”
Three errors by Woodbury accounted for three unearned runs for Gold in the bottom of the fourth inning. Woodbury committed seven total in the game.
Jacob Gieseke drove in Chase Meyer after a leadoff double in the seventh inning to give Gold an 8-0 lead.
John Horner took the loss for Woodbury, having given up seven runs (three earned) on eight hits in four innings of work.
Gold advances to the semifinals to face Fairmont at 1 p.m. on Friday, which will be held at Sleepy Eye Ballpark.
“Fairmont’s a very good baseball team and we’ll expect nothing but their best,” Drexler said. “But we’ll bring our best and come out on top.”
