NEW ULM – Joan Blackstad, 82, of New Ulm, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor John Gabrielson officiating.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday and from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, SOUTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the churach on Saturday.

Joan is survived by her husband, James Blackstad of New Ulm; daughter, Sue Blackstad of New Ulm; son, Alan Blackstad of New Ulm; sister, Florence Baarts of Vernon Center; nieces; and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three daughters in infancy; sisters; Lorraine Miller, Regean Van Bibber; and two brothers in infancy.
Joan Mina Dusell was born on October 13, 1931 in Madelia to Renald and Edna (Cooling) Dusell. On June 1, 1958 she was united in marriage to James Blackstad in LaSalle. Joan ran a dog grooming business from her home in New Ulm known as Jaybe’s Bichons & Pet Grooming. She enjoyed raising and showing Bichon Frise dogs and reading. Joan’s passion was always her dogs, and she has left behind Cassie, Henry Trotter and grandpuppy, Bently. She also loved sitting in her back yard enjoying her birds. She was a wonderful wife, amazing mother, and truest friend to all that knew her. She will be dearly missed by all. Joan was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
