Sleepy Eye VFW gets eliminated from tourney
MANKATO – Sleepy Eye VFW went 1-1 in the District 2 VFW baseball tournament on Friday and was eliminated from the tournament.
Sleepy Eye ends its season with a 17-7 mark.
After a convincing win over Blue Earth earlier in the day, Sleepy Eye ran into Hutchinson, a team that it defeated to open the Northwest Subdistrict a week earlier. Hutchinson won the elimination bracket game 7-1.
In the first game, Sleepy Eye scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning, then needed only four pitches to get out of the bottom half as it cruised along to the 18-0, five-inning victory.
Jaden Mickelson had three hits and scored three runs for Sleepy Eye. He also had four RBIs. Winning pitcher Nathan Schroepfer also had a pair of hits and three RBIs and Alex Bergemann had three RBIs.
“I think all but one of our batters scored and we just kept putting the ball in play,” Mickelson said.
Bergemann broke the game open with a two-run double that made it 5-0 at that point. Schroepfer later contributed with a two-run double, his third RBI of the inning, as Sleepy Eye sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the first.
Sleepy Eye added a pair of runs in the second inning, giving it a 12-0 lead at that point. The runs came courtesy of a two-run single by Matt Mielke.
Bergemann and Alex Sellner each had RBIs in the fourth inning as Sleepy Eye scored two more runs and Mickelson had a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning to add to his big day.
Schroepfer pitched the first inning. Sean Salfer pitched the final four innings for Sleepy Eye.
Adam Legred lasted only 1/3 of an inning for Blue Earth in the loss.
