Chanhassen roughs up New Ulm
NEW ULM – Chanhassen pounded out 17 hits as it defeated New Ulm Kaiserhoff 11-1 in 7 innings in River Valley League amateur baseball play.
Luke Penovich received the win on the mound for the Red Birds. Penovich gave up one run on two hits. He struck out five in five innings of work.
Dominic Comacho, who was tagged with the loss, gave up seven runs on seven hits while walking four. He struck out two in three innings.
Travis Kretsch was 2-for-3 with an RBI for New Ulm.
Shaun Riesgraf was 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs for the Red Birds.
Chanhassen got on the board with two runs in the first after a TJ Gulden single and then Riesgraf delivered his first home run of the game.
The Red Birds added another in the second after Jeffery Kressler lead off the inning with a single and was later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Swenson.
New Ulm answered in the bottom of the inning by scoring its lone run of the game when Kretsch blooped a single to score Mike Schlottman.
After a scoreless third inning for each team, the Red Birds then put up six runs to increase their lead to 9-1.
“They knocked it around on us,” Kaiserhoff head coach Tim Reinke said. “Getting ahead early in the count is what we’re really trying to work on.”
Chanhassen put up a run in each the sixth and the seventh inning to enforce the 10-run rule.
New Ulm travels to Belle Plaine Friday for its first game of the River Valley playoffs.
