Heed the climate warnings
To the editor:
Ron Meador at MinnPost.org on July 22, 2014 summarized the State of the Climate Report of 2013 as follows.
Sea surface temperatures in the North Pacific were the warmest on record.
Atmospheric levels of C02 exceeded 400 parts per million for the first time in Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.
Record high temperatures were recorded at 20 meter depths in the Arctic permafrost of Alaska and Australia recorded its warmest year ever.
Tom Friedman in his column in the New York Times has stated that the first rule of holes is to stop digging.
Steve Coil in his book “Private Empire” on Exxon Mobil points out that the oil companies early on ran the numbers and found that they never could earn the profits from developing renewable energy sources that they were earning by selling oil, so they set out to block governments and societies from moving in that direction.
In March of this year a Pentagon advisory committee described the climate crisis as a catalyst for conflict that may well cause failures of governance and societal collapse. Retired Air Force Genera! Charles F. Wald stated climate change is going to be a direct cause of instability.
It is time we heed the warnings and move from a fossil fuel economy to a renewable fuel economy. The longer the world waits, the more difficult it will be.
