Hanska defeats Essig in Region 2C playoffs
ESSIG TOWNSHIP – Hanska defeated Essig 5-3 in Region 2C amateur baseball tournament play on Sunday.
The Bluejays scored first with RBI singles from Mitch Stueber in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Lakers tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth, however, with RBIs from Ben Wolf and Derek Wilfahrt. They took a 3-2 lead with a two-out RBI single from Brady Mosenden that drove in Eric Portner in the sixth.
Essig responded in the seventh with a two-out RBI single from Stueber to tie it at 3-3.
A two-run home run by Portner shortly afterward sealed the 5-3 victory for Hanska.
Portner finished 2-for-3 on the day with his two-run homer. Mosenden led the Lakers at the plate, having gone 4-for-4 with a double, triple and one RBI.
Sam Carlson, a draftee from St. James, got the win for Hanska. He went the distance and gave up three earned runs on 11 scattered hits with five strikeouts and six walks.
Jason Nachreiner of Springfield got the loss for Essig. He also went the distance and gave up five earned on 10 hits.
Stueber led both teams with three RBIs on a 3-for-5 performance, while Dusty Fleck went 3-for-5 as well.
Hanska is now 2-0 in Region 2C play, while Essig is 0-2. Essig is at Lamberton at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Hanska hosts Searles on Tuesday.
