Bullheads finish regular season with a victory
SEARLES – The Searles Bullheads came back from a six-run first-inning deficit and defeated the visiting New Hope Bandits by a score of 11-8 in their regular season finale on Saturday evening.
The Bandits had hoped to steal a victory by jumping on Bullheads starter Brant Drill with four hits, four walks and a hit batter to begin the game.
Searles promptly answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on base hits from Troy Kamm, John Giefer, Todd Hulke and Tom Glaser. Cory Schaefer added a walk and Drill was hit by a pitch in the inning, but the big blow was a ringing double to the ivy monster in right off the bat of Craig Schmitz.
Drill allowed an unearned run in the second, but again the Bullheads came back to tie the game at seven in their next at-bat on base hits from Giefer, Schmitz, and Doug Ekstrom.
In the third inning, Searles completed its comeback When Drill led off the inning with a hit and was replaced by pinch runner Bruce Jacobs. After and error and another Kamm single, Jacobs scored on a Giefer walk to give the Bullheads their first lead of the game. Three more runs were then added on a Schaefer sacrifice fly and a Rummel base hit.
Rummel took the mound in the fourth with no outs and the bases loaded in relief of Drill and allowed just one of those runners to score. He finished the game strong with three strikeouts in the final three frames to earn the win.
The Bullheads finished their regular season with a 9-7 record and will begin play Saturday, in the MSMABA State Tournament being hosted by Gaylord, Arlington, Norwood and Hamburg.
