MLC move-in commences

NEW ULM – With a little help from their friends, Martin Luther College (MLC) students began moving into college dorm rooms Thursday afternoon and Friday.

Returning and new students included junior triple music major Hope Werre of Sun Prairie, Wis. and her brother Jason Werre, a freshman on the pastor track.

Perhaps it was their mother Jennifer, who graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College in the 1980s, who was the most pleased to find MLC dorm staff students waiting to help the family as they backed into their parking lot stall.

“It was wonderful to see eight guys (dorm staff students) ready to help us unload. It made it much easier for us,” Jennifer Werre said. “We feel good about sending our kids here. We love the good, small-town atmosphere. It’s a good place to be.”

“MLC’s a good school. We love it,” Hope said. A member of the MLC band and choir plus the New Ulm Municipal Band, she plays the flute, trumpet, piano, organ and violin and enjoys running.

Jason Werre said he enjoys playing disc golf in his spare time.

Luke Werre said the six-hour drive from Sun Prairie was enjoyable, with pleasant weather. “This is classical weather for this time of year,” he said. “We usually get lots of heat and humidity in August.”

The MLC dorm staff team helping freshman students move in included Aaron Platze, a senior from Olivet, Mich., on the pastor track at MLC. “It’s a little warm, but it’s bearable. The shade is awesome,” he said about the weather.

Parent tours and presentations were held Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening at MLC. A campus picnic meal was held Friday night in the cafeteria followed music with a DJ Friday night at the New Ulm Event Center.

On Saturday, students meet with their academic advisors and other MLC staffers, before learning about dormitory guidelines and campus life, followed by a bonfire in Luther Hollow.

Following Sunday morning services, all new, transfer and re-admitted students receive mandated Title IX training before walking to Flandrau State Park for swimming, volleyball and lawn games.

Classes begin Monday, including a 10:15 a.m. worship service at the Chapel of the Christ.
