New Ulm earns another ranking as safe city
NEW ULM – Residents in New Ulm can take comfort that it is a safe community.
Safe Choice Security recently named New Ulm one of the top 20 safest cities in Minnesota. Using crime statistics from over 300 cities in Minnesota, it placed New Ulm at 15th on the list between Plymouth and Edina.
Safe Choice Security created this list using FBI Crime Statistics from 2012. Statistics on property and violent crime rates for cities were compiled to determine ranking.
In New Ulm, less than a single violent crime occurs per 1,000 people. The last murder committed in New Ulm was in August of 1987.
This the second time this year New Ulm has been included on a list of Safe Minnesota Cities. In May, Movoto Real Estate placed New Ulm as the eighth safest Minnesota city with a population over 10,000. At that time Police Chief Myron Wieland credited the city’s low crime rate with a relatively quick response time from police as well as a strong sense of community. “It’s neighbors looking out for neighbors,” he said.
The complete list of top 20 safest cities by Safe Choice Security include Hibbing, Lino Lakes, Farmington, Shoreview, Sauk Rapids, Rosemount, Lakeville, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Mound, Arden Hills, North Mankato, Minnetonka, Plymouth, New Ulm, Edina, Cottage Grove, Winona, Prior Lake and Northfield.
