Cathedral opens with road win

SHERBURN – New Ulm Cathedral opened its season with a 30-18 victory against Martin County West on Friday in a Southern Minnesota Conference game.
The Greyhounds (1-0, 1-0 Southern Minnesota) totaled 373 yards on the ground. They were led by Bryan Kokesch, who rushed for 171 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.
Austin Cooper led the team in carries with 20, netting 130 yards, two touchdowns and one successful 2-point conversion.
Jacob Gangelhoff had nine carries for 69 yards and was in on nine tackles on defense.
James Herzog led the Greyhounds defensively with 13 tackles and one sack. Brandon Beranek contributed eight tackles on the night.
Cathedral continues its season next Friday against Red Rock Central in Lamberton.
Wabasso 14, BLHS 0
HECTOR – Wabasso shut out Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday night in Southern Minnesota Conference football.
Mitchell Fulton scored both Rabbit touchdowns. His first one was an 80-yard run at 5:28 of the first quarter. Fulton caught a pass from Nick Altermatt for the 2-point conversion an 8-0 lead.
Fulton then scored with 9:36 left in the game on a 5-yard run to complete the scoring for the Rabbits.
Fulton had 25 carries for 174 yards to go with his two scores.
Cody Johnson had 13 tackles for BLHS. Johnson led the Mustangs with 20 carries for 68 yards.
Wabasso (1-0) will host Minnesota Valley Lutheran, while BLHS (0-1) will travel to Springfield (1-0) next Friday night.
Madelia 54, Heron Lake-Okabena 8
MADELIA – Madelia defeated Heron Lake-Okabena in a conference matchup on Friday night by a score of 54-8.
Madelia jumped out to a 40-0 lead by halftime. Linebacker Jake Denn had 16 tackles and one sack. Jack Korteum had sack sacks and a fumble recovery.
Quarterback Kyle Schultz carried the ball 10 times for 100 yards, went 6-for-10 passing for 124 yards. He ran for two touchdown and also passed for two as well.
Derrick Van Hee ran the ball 18 times for 72 yards. He also contributed with a 91 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Madelia (1-0) will play at Renville County West on Friday.
LP/HT 29, GFW 6
WINTHROP – Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity scored 20 points in the first half en route to a 29-6 win against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday night in a nonconference football game.
Tristan Schmidt rushed the ball 15 times for 56 yards and one rushing touchdown. Defensively, Schmidt had 10 tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery. Thomas Weikle had two receptions for 66 yards.
GFW scored its lone touchdown of the game in the second quarter.
Leighton Messner had eight tackles and one sack.
GFW (0-1) will host Western Lutheran on Friday.
